Describing a Pattern
You can see patterns in nature, art and music. You can use math to describe the patterns.
Example 1. 1,4,7,10,...
A number line helps you compare numbers and arrange them in order. One a horizontal number line, an integer is always greater than the integers to its left and less than the integers to its right.
< meane 'is less than'
> meane 'is greater than'
Example -2 is greater than -4 because -4 is the left side of -2 then -2 > -4 or -4 < -2
Example 1 is greater than -2 because 1 is the right side of -2 then 1 > -2 or -2 < 1
Absolute value of an integer
The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0 on a number line. You write "the absolute value of -3" as l-3l.
The absolute value of an integer is always positive.
Example Find the absolute value of -5 and 9.
l-5l = 5 Ans
l9l = 9 Ans
