Giving Directions

     Before you can give directions, you must first understand the question being asked. Following, is a list of questions commonly used when asking directions:

Excuse Me,

  • How do I get to…?
  • I’m looking for….
  • How far is it to …?
  • Can you tell me the way to…?
  • I’m trying to find….
  • Do you know where …?
  • Is this the way to…?
  • Where can I find…?
  • Can you tell me where…?
  • Where’s…?

After you understand the question, you can use the following expressions to give direction:

  • Go straight until you come to ….., then, ……..
  • Go along the …… until you come to, ……, then, ……
  • Follow …. for about …. kilometers until you come to …., then …..
  • Take the (first) turn on the left/right.
  • Follow the (signs) to ……
  • It’s right behind the ……
  • It’s in front of …….
  • Turn left/right at the ……..
                                  when you get to …….
                                  after you pass…….
                                  before the …….
  • You can’t miss it!

In order to give directions accurately, you should learn these positions:
